About Bankside

The London district of Bankside is close to River Thames’ southern bank and belongs to the Borough of Southwark. It is also a part of Better Bankside, a district for business improvement.

Bankside’s name is formed from two Middle English words, ‘banke’ and ‘side’. The district is the riverside of Paris Garden and Clink, the former liberties. During the Elizabethan period, the district was occupied by playhouses and bear baiting pits such as the Rose, the Swan, the Globe Theatre and the Hope Theatre. Bankside’s skyline is highlighted by the building that formerly used to house Bankside Power Station. The building is the current address of the modern art gallery, Tate Modern. This art gallery is the world’s most- visited, averaging around 4.7mn visitors every year. The gallery’s national collection dates back to 1500 AD. It is under the Tate Group, which also runs Tate St Ives, Tate Liverpool, Tate Britain and Tate Online.

The complex of Bankside 1/ 2/ 3 on Southwark Street is a new development in this area. The three building together employ more than 5000 people. IPC Media occupies Bankside 1, with RBS occupying the other two. Allies and Morrison designed the complex.

The district is served by the railway stations Blackfriars, Southwark and London Bridge. Via Millennium Bridge, a direct connection (only for pedestrians) exists between St Paul’s Cathedral and Tate Modern.
