Kennington, SE11 is an area in Central London, which is located to the south of the River Thames. Most of the district is in the London Borough of Lambeth and smaller parts are in the London Borough of Southwark. Kennington is positioned about two kilometres south-east of Charing Cross and is included in the London Plan. In the 1850’s, the district’s proximity to the centre of London was the factor for its quick development.
Soon it became a popular residential area and by 1855, it was already identified as one of the metropolitan centres of London. It is believed that the district received its name from a term in Old English, which means ‘estate’, which is related to a man, who was called Cēna. Another version explains that the name of Kennington derives from a term that stands for ‘town of the King.’
In the beginning of the 18th century, the area was just a village, where several executions were performed. However, later that century, the district went through a significant development as the Westminster Bridget was built. It connected Kennington to London and have the place an easy access to the city. By the middle of the 18th century, the district had already become a residential area with a number of terrace houses.
