About Bethnal Green
Bethnal Green is a London area, located in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The name of the area is said to derive from the Anglo – Saxon words healh and blithe, respectively meaning angle, and happy.
Formerly, it was a part of Stepney but it became a part of the Metropolis and later on Bethnal Green formed a part of the County of London at the end of the 19th century. The beginning of the 20th century saw the fast growth of the population and the economy in the area but unfortunately the development was brought to a standstill really soon.
Initially, Bethnal Green was predominantly a rural area with a well developed market gardening and light industry. However, the World War II have caused significant damages in the area, almost 200 people were killed or injured during the aerial bombardment during the 20th century.
Nowadays the area is a well – developed, multicultural one. It has good transport links and large Bangladeshi, Somali, African communities. According to the last Census, the total population of Bethnal Green is almost 30, 000 people. The area offers appealing sports, entertainment and recreational spots as well as tourist attractions and green open spaces.
