About Blackheath

The inner suburban area of Blackheath is in southeast London and forms a part of two London Boroughs- Lewisham and Greenwich. The district contains one of Greater London’s biggest common land areas.
1166 records the district’s name as ‘Blachehedfeld’, meaning ‘dark coloured heathland’. There is an urban myth which says that Blackheath was closely associated with ‘Black Death’ or the 1665 Plague.

Greenwich and Lewisham councils jointly manage the heath. Acid grassland areas are retained by Lewisham, supporting some rare wild plants like Fiddle Dock, Spotted Medick and Common Stork’s Bill. Another key area is Granville Park’s east, between Morden Row and South Row. The environment of this place is ideal for supporting wild grassland’s flora and fauna. A varied list of animal species were recorded here, including common lizards, hares, natterjack toads, quail, bats, nightingale and ring ouzel.

Blackheath Park, created by John Cator, contains some fine examples of Victorian and Georgian houses with the most noted among them being Michael Searles’ terrace houses, The Paragon. Some other popular buildings around the area are Morden College, Blackheath High School and Church Army Chapel.
List of nearby areas include Charlton, Mottingham, Kidbrooke, Lewisham, Lee Green, Hither Green, Greenwich, Hither Green, Deptford, Woolwich, Eltham, New Cross and Catford.

According to tradition, this district was the first place in England to introduce golf. Blackheath is famous for its annual London Marathon.
Blackheath station and Transport for London serves the area.
